WHEN WILL 'POKÉMON GO' LAUNCH IN CANADA AND THE REST OF THE WORLD?

JUL 10

Pokémon GO is quickly taking the world by storm, but not as quickly as some parts of that world might like. Nintendo’s new augmented reality app is currently available in the US, Australia and New Zealand, but that leaves a pretty vast swath of the world Pokemon-less.

There’s not much information available at the moment: the initial press release said only that Pokémon GO would be “coming soon” to Canada, Europe and South America, and that’s all the company has said so far. Check back for more.

Yesterday saw a gradual launch, starting out in Australia and New Zealand before moving on to the United States.

The servers have been having a bit of trouble handling the rush, however, so developer Niantic Labs may be waiting until it can stabilize that situation before adding millions more players into the mix.

The app has made a pretty big splash so far: it’s currently sitting at #1 for both free downloads and top grossing on the app store, and I’ve seen more than a few people wandering around my city with their heads down in their phones, and they looked like they were playing Pokémon GO, at least.

It’s been an excellent game for when I’ve been able to play it, and I’m terribly excited to see how this whole thing develops. Nintendo is often accused of not pushing their classic franchises far enough, but you can hardly say that here. If the rest of Nintendo’s mobile strategy going forward is as lively as this, then we’ve got some fun stuff to look forward to.

We’ll keep you posted on the global launch: the United States came quicker than I was expecting, so Canada, Europe and South America may go live soon. For right now, it leaves our neighbors to the North looking southward, peering into our now Pokemon-infested country with envy, unable to participate.

There are workarounds that involve switching your region to the United States, and people appear to have been having some luck with that. It’s fairly involved, however, and likely only an option for those that really don’t want to wait.
